Assorted

ASSORTED is a magazine to help create a community and space for Asian Americans to share stories and discuss their struggles. Through print and digital, ASSORTED is a tool used to help Asian-Americans reaffirm their identity and culture.

Ideation

From the outset of this project, I recognized it would be a formidable challenge. How could I create an experience that is specific enough to resonate while remaining inclusive enough to avoid alienating anyone? I embraced the concept of 'assortment,' reflecting on how, despite shared cultural backgrounds, our experiences can vary widely. My goal was to explore Asian-American identity by showcasing a diverse range of personalities and stories, rather than confining ourselves to a single archetype.

To embody this idea of 'assortment,' I decided that each story would have its own distinct color and voice. My aim was to highlight this diversity through design, crafting a brand that unifies these varied experiences into one cohesive whole while celebrating each individual narrative. This challenge became about harmonizing diversity into a single, yet multifaceted, brand identity.

Final product

Designing a magazine from cover to cover was a formidable yet exhilarating challenge. It provided an incredible opportunity to experiment with various layouts and typography settings, pushing the boundaries of my design skills. I particularly enjoyed the creative freedom of tailoring each story with its own unique layout, which allowed me to explore different visual styles and approaches.

Working with print design was a rewarding experience, offering a tangible contrast to digital formats. Seeing the magazine come to life on paper brought a new dimension to the project, highlighting the nuances that are sometimes lost in digital viewing.

This project was not only a chance to refine my typography skills but also a way to immerse myself in a passion project. It allowed me to blend creativity with technical expertise, resulting in a final product that was both visually compelling and deeply satisfying to create.
